Our Vector onboard retail management back office platform is currently getting a full redesign. To successfully redesign this immense platform at scale it was key to implement a Design System from the very beginning. The decision to use the established Material Design System allows us to bring a unified responsive user experience across various devices and platforms. This well documented set of UI policies still provides a flexible design library to build from.
The design system used the centralised model, with our UXUI team in charge of its creation and evolution. Once I had set up the foundational elements like the typography, colour, buttons, states and naming conventions for the team it was time for us to start defining patterns and building out the reusable components.
The patterns we developed provided the instructions on how to use the components in a logical and consistent way across the product. The components are the building blocks which allow us to deliver a consistent user experience.
A Design System is the single source of truth for the new Vector interface though this “truth” will continue to evolve as the redesign does.
Milky Way InVision DSM
The core library was brought into InVision Design System Manager. This provided the tool to build consistent UI at scale with the principles, design language, and best practices outlined in the resource.
